As one of our road warriors that drives from race to race, Brian James (Rods & Pistons) spends a LOT of time in our Toyota Sienna… so we asked him ‘what’s your ultimate road-trip playlist?’

Brian JamesIn order for one to understand my music playlist you must first understand a bit about me and where I come from musically. I grew up in a very music rich environment being

exposed to many various genres of music ranging from the most classical Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, to some of the heaviest metal around, into the craziest rap, all summed up by a decent variety of gospel/religious music. I was a band geek. I played instruments such as the piano, alto saxophone, tried trombone for a little while, and eventually settled into a love affair with anything drum or percussion related.

The best thing about music is, that it is speaks to all of us in different ways, on different levels, on any different day. The reason I like a song may be because of the beat, it may be because on a certain day that song spoke to me in a way that made me like it, it may be because I really like the lyrics or the title. But that is the beautiful thing about music. It truly doesn’t care who you are or where you’ve been, and the reason I like a certain song may be completely different than why someone else likes that same song.

That being said, my playlist varies greatly depending on what kind of mood I’m in. If I’m in a good mood you’ll hear anything from upbeat metal with lots of drums, to loud bass rap filled music. If I’m just in a chill mood, maybe some Xavier Rudd or Adele, and believe this or not, if I’m just kind of thinking about home and where I came from possibly some older country, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, or maybe even something with banjo in it.

What do I mainly listen to while driving our Toyota Sienna around the U.S.? Answer, mostly SiriusXM Octane Radio channel 37, #lovethatkaylariley they play everything from 90’s rock/metal to current rock and metal. And I love most of it. So it should be no surprise that my traveling playlist is close to that:

  1. Korn- any of it but primarily the entire first album. I can remember when that album first released, my sister and I sat in her room and listened to it top to bottom and from that day forward they have been my overall favorite music group.

  1. Limp Bizkit- Love these guys, their music takes me back and puts me in my high school days and even to this day I rock out to them every chance I get. Saw them in concert a few years back and they still put on a great show.

  1. Toby Keith- “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue.” How much more patriotic can you get, and I love this great country we live in.

  1. Mudvayne- “Happy” This song fires me up every time I listen to it.

  1. Nelly- “Just A Dream” This song has a brief story as to why it’s on this playlist, and although it really has nothing to do with the lyrics it has always been about the title, and the timing. It makes me dig deep and think about what we do and how difficult it is to be successful out here in the NHRA. In 2010 the car I was working on went into the final race of the year with better than a 60 point lead to win the championship and we failed to win the first round which would have locked the championship up for us. John Force went on to win the race and also the championship that we had come so close to winning. When we returned to the pit from the starting line this song was playing and I all could here of the lyrics were “it was only just a dream.”

  1. Rise Against-another one of my favorite bands despite being extremely political, several of their songs make the playlist “Re-Education,” “From Heads Unworthy,” “Blood To Bleed,” “Roadside,” “Make it Stop,” “Prayer of the Refugee,” and most recently, “I Don’t want to be here anymore.”

  1. Disturbed- “Stupify,” “Down with the sickness,” another favorite band, I saw them in concert before they released their first album and I’ve liked them ever since.

  1. Hollywood Undead- “Levitate” is just one of those songs that’s loud fast and fun. It’s been on my playlist now for several years.

  1. Sum 41- “Still Waiting” loud, fast, and gets me going, one of those songs I know all the words to and I can sing along with it.

  1. Blink 182- “What’s My Age Again,” “Feelin This,” “Adams Song,” Takes me back to my high school years and again I can sing all of these song without missing a word.

  1. Through Fire- “Stronger” listen to it and you’ll get it. This one fires me up and makes me think I can do anything more than I already believe I can.

  1. Skillet- “Feel Invincible” I just really like this song, it speaks to me both musically and lyrically.

  1. X Ambassadors- “Renegades” I heard this song not very long ago and first it caught my attention because of the tune and the beat, but then I watched the music video and really listened to it and now it really is one of my favorites.

  1. From Ashes To New- “Breaking Now” I just don’t care anymore is one first phrase in this song and I was hooked from there. Love the heavy hitting music and this dude’s voice is pretty strong. Maybe it puts me in somewhat of a vengeful mood. But nonetheless, I really like it.

  1. Slipknot- “Wait And Bleed” Slipknot was another band I heard live in concert before they released their first album. In 1999 I was a senior in high school and attended my first festival concert that was Ozzfest. Slipknot opened the entire show at 11:00AM and started with the heaviest fastest drumming I had ever heard and even though I like most all of their music “Wait And Bleed” is my favorite.
